  1. One of the kindest professors I’ve ever had at any level. Genuinely cares about her students. If you take her class make sure you know exactly what she wants to see on your exam though. Zero room for trying to bullshit an answer, she has something explicit she wants to see for every question and if you dont have it completely you lose a LOT of points even if youre very close. Make sure you have her old rubrics handy

  2. Nice lady. Thought complex litigation was a good class and the exam was very fair and no surprises.

She spends a lot of time reviewing the material in class which catered to people who don’t read or outline. I thought probably the course could be done in 3 credits. Ultimately would recommend the class–not a huge reading load and not a particularly complicated subject matter. If you’re nervous about adding in another 4 credit doctrinal because of an otherwise heavy schedule, this would be the class to take.

  3. One of the smartest people I’ve ever met. Knows CivPro like the back of her hand. More than her intelligence/knowledge, she structures her class in such a terrific way for a first semester 1L and you gain such great insight on how to write good exam answers. She is very specific about what she wants on answers, but you also have a ton of practice to know what she wants. I haven’t had a professor provide guidance like this since high school or middle school.

I really learned a lot and she was always open to explaining concepts during class, after class, and in office hours. One small critique: she will find ways to feel slighted which made for uncomfortable class atmosphere at times.

  4. Amazing professor. I had her for CivPro for my 1L Fall and she structured the class in such a way that it is eased the transition into law school. Her cold calls are not random – you will know when you walk into the class whether you will be called because she puts the names on the board. In addition, you can email her to opt out without having to give any reason.

In addition, Prof. Caroll uploads good summaries to Canvas after each class which is great to keep notes (and great to review before your final.) She also assigns a group of people each class to be note takers so there is a complied note document that is VERY helpful for the final as you can cntrl + f that document if you are lost about whatever is on the final.

CivPro is a terribly boring class but Prof. Caroll tries to make it as painless as possible. It is the reason she has been voted by students to be the professor of the year twice (most recent being in 2022!)

  5. Amazing professor and a kind person. Had her for civ pro and cannot recommend her highly enough. She obviously clearly cares about her students and her lectures are well organized. Her exam was really fair and she does a good job prepping students for it with practice tests and problems that are reviewed in class.

  6. Professor Carroll is great. I had her for both Civil Procedure and Complex Litigation. Her usual place among the “best professors” at MLaw is warranted. Professor Carroll is an expert on class actions, but also on civil procedure generally. She is also incredibly approachable and wants to help her students succeed.

She deeply cares about pedagogy and always works to improve her teaching.
She uses several very useful teaching techniques. These include: (1) a closing review at the end of every class, (2) a list of “key takeaways” which include essentially all of the exam content, (3) polling slides, (4) review hypos, (5) past exams with both a rubric and sample top scores, and (6) a group of notes takers for class so that there are always notes available for absent students.

I don’t think I’ve had a more transparent professor while at Michigan Law.

  7. Wonderful educator, incredibly smart, and an overall lovely/understanding person. I would take any class with her, even if I didn’t like the topic. The only thing to point out is that she has a very narrow answer key for her exams and likes things to be done a certain way. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s good to know when you’re taking a class with her. Overall, 15/10!
