  1. I was 100% uninterested in Tax but Fox made it bearable and easy to understand. He’s very heavy on economic theory and he cold calls a LOT but they usually aren’t hard and he’s kind when you flub. He was also exceedingly kind during the strange COVID semester, which meant a lot.

  2. I had Fox for EO in Fall 2019, and I had a great experience. I came in with limited background in the corporate world, and Fox does a great job of explaining corporate topics clearly to people new to the concept, and he’s very good about using powerpoint slides to clarify the lecture. I remember some complaints about him moving a little quickly, so reviewing your class notes and powerpoints after class as it happens was really helpful for me. He’s also very good about calling back topics from earlier in the semester once we hit early November, which really helped cement learning for finals time. LOTS of cold calling, like in a class of 40 I’d expect to be called about once a week, but none of it was particularly difficult, and if you were struggling he’d pass without making a big deal of it.

The exam was fair and comprehensive, but very time sensitive. He gave a breakdown of how much each question was worth, and I largely followed that in assessing my time, but I know a lot of people struggled to make it to the last question.

  3. I did not expect to enjoy Tax all that much and it ended up being one of my favorite classes in law school. I think it’s a useful class for almost anyone, if you’re more of a policy-type not interested in transactional work and on the fence about Tax, I highly recommend taking it with Fox. He’s pretty unabashedly left-leaning, so maybe don’t take him if you’ll take issue with “controversial” assertions like “the staggering inequality in the US warrants wealth redistribution,” but I definitely wouldn’t have engaged with the material as much if he had been any other way (and he does still always present all sides of an issue). He also frequently brings in current events (but doesn’t test us on them), and I really appreciated understanding the American Rescue Plan, etc. Our class was remote and he did a really good job of breaking up class with polls, debates, small group discussions (that were mostly actually valuable), and practice problems. His cold calls can be tough but they’re very, very good, in that he’s never tough just to get you to remember some irrelevant fact. He makes you think and he’s good at rephrasing/guiding if you don’t get it at first, and he’s also very kind when you’re wrong (while still making the takeaways clear for the rest of the class). He’s super patient and really wants to make sure students understand the material before moving on. He also is very intentional about incorporating review into later classes, so you never just forget about the material you learned a month ago. Fox is easily one of the best professors I’ve had in law school.
