Hathaway is a legend in refugee law and a great human as well. His 6-week course on the refugee definition is super intensive, but if you have any interest in the subject whatsoever, don’t miss an opportunity to learn from the best.
The high amount of reading is somewhat mitigated by the fact you will only be on call for 2 out of the 6 weeks. There was a short (10-page) paper and a 100 T/F exam.
Hathway is a great lecturer and yeah, a refugee law legend. The class is somewhat demanding in terms of reading quantity and cold-call style (it can vary between general overlay or demanding tiny details of a case, but you’re “on call” so you can prepare well enough). The paper was brief but he doesn’t give too much guidance on it and can be a bit of harsh grader, made all the more nervewracking by the T/F exam which is kind of a crapshoot. Still, I really liked the class and you learn a lot. He also has you submit “hard questions” once in the course and can use them to guide the lecture, which is a really cool opportunity to offer your feedback/critiques of his book/arguments and think deeply about refugee law. I would definitely recommend the course.
