  1. I took K-12 Education Law with Crockett. Pretty straightforward as a class – you go through the topics in the textbook, which is a solid survey overview of things like race/segregation, poverty, special education, state and federal constitutional challenges in education, school funding, school discipline, free speech, religion, gender/Title IX, curriculum, testing, charter schools, etc. You can either take an essay/issue spotter exam or write a paper.

If you come to class, pay attention, and participate, the exam is totally doable and very fair. My class had a decent number of 3Ls who were a little checked out and didn’t love that 1) the class was early in the morning and 2) there was a decent amount of reading. But I really wanted to learn the subject matter, so all that was fine by me. Crockett is knowledgeable, engaging (to be clear, not Eve Primus, but also not dry or boring), and has a LOT of real world experience doing this work to draw on. My favorite parts of class were when she told stories from practice or talked about how things work in the real world. She is also very willing to engage in serious conversations about how race plays into education in this country and how schools are being largely re-segregated. She doesn’t mind when you ask her questions/get off topic. We got a little crunched towards the end trying to finish up topics but I think she’s probably got the pacing more figured out by now. Also, she’ll take student suggestions at the beginning of the semester if there’s particular topics you are interested in or really want to learn about.
