I had Professor Lynch for Internal Investigations in Winter 2020. This was the best class I’ve ever taken in law school. He structured the class around reading internal investigative reports, writing a few short papers, and discussing them for 2 hours a week. The grading is lenient, because he is far more interested in the weekly discussion and our thoughts/analyses. He places significant responsibility on the students to carry the discussion, which created an excellent classroom dynamic and taught me a lot about my peers.
The most valuable part of the class for me was having him walk through his own analyses of the report. Professor Lynch is Michigan’s general counsel and a former AUSA from DC and seeing a practitioner dissect a legal issue line by line was illuminating.
I never felt engaged by a law school class until this one. Although the workload and grading are relatively easy, I felt driven to give 100% and thoroughly read the reports to best contribute to our class discussions.
TLDR: Professor Lynch is the best professor I’ve had in law school.
I had Professor Lynch for Internal Investigations in Winter 2020. This class has a lot of reading, but it is worth it for the incredible discussions in class and how much I learned from this class. He runs the class by having the class read one or more reports from an Internal Investigation each week and then having students analyze them and unpack them. This was my favorite part of Winter 2020, and it was still engaging even after we moved to Zoom during COVID (every other class failed to even marginally hold my interest).
This is one of the best classes I have had in law school. If I could take more like these, I absolutely would. This is right in Professor Lynch’s wheelhouse, and he has been on both sides of Internal Investigations in practice, both as an AUSA in DC and as the general counsel of UM. If you have any interest in the subject, this class is a must take.
