The work is pretty meaningful as the clients are typically small business owners and nonprofits in Detroit. While transactional work itself can be boring at times, counseling clients is a ton of fun. In general, client interaction is probably the best part of this clinic. My biggest practical takeaway from the experience was learning how to comfortably handle clients and communicate legal concepts to them. The workload wasn’t bad, but it will definitely vary based on who your clients are and how backlogged the clinic is.
In terms of the seminar, more time is spent on soft skill development and reflection rather than learning substantive law. You learn a lot about Detroit and its history, which I appreciated a lot. The CEC’s advisers, Dana and Kelly, are very chill and great to work with. There is a decent amount of busy work, but you can absolutely get away with not spending that much time on the assignments. The same goes for readings – you can skim them and get through class discussions without trouble.
